Sparking Solutions: Students tackle real-world challenges
The fourth-grade teachers from all three Stuttgart Community elementary schools successfully collaborated to host a standards-aligned, community-focused learning event inspired by “Spark” by Chris Baron.
This experience supported DoWEA College and Career Ready Standards by engaging students in informational learning, problem-solving, and real-world application of STEM concepts.
In the morning, students participated in hands-on demonstrations led by Army Community Service (ACS), the American Red Cross, Fire Department, Military Police, CID, Community Health Nurse, Arts and Crafts, Space Force, and a first aid station.
Students observed how emergency response teams use technology, communication, and teamwork to address large-scale fires, directly connecting standards to real life situations.
In the afternoon, students engaged in a simulation where they applied critical thinking, collaboration, and decision-making skills to solve emergency scenarios. This aligns with DoWEA’s Community Strategic Plan by fostering resilience, global citizenship, and partnerships with the local community.
Overall, the event strengthened academic skills while building students’ understanding of civic responsibility and the important role of community service organizations.
