Yokota schools celebrate a thrilling first ever Yokota Book Battle Championship
YOKOTA, Japan – The inaugural Yokota Book Battle brought together young readers from Yokota West Elementary School and Mendel Elementary School for spirited competition, teamwork, and a shared love of books. What began as months of reading and preparation culminated in three exciting events that showcased just how dedicated and competitive these students could be.
A Year of Reading and Teamwork
Throughout the school year, students from both schools read from a list of 12 books and formed teams of four to five readers. Each team developed its own reading strategy, met regularly to discuss the books, and practiced answering questions. Their preparation set the stage for a series of battles that tested not only memory but teamwork under pressure.
Mendel Elementary School Battle – April 15
Mendel Elementary hosted the first competition in its Information Center, where 22 teams faced off in two semi‑final rounds. The top six teams advanced to the finals, and from there, the top three earned a coveted spot in the Yokota Book Battle Championship. Parents, teachers, and students in grades 2–5 filled the room, cheering on the teams as they raced to answer each question. The top three teams received medals and bragging rights.
Yokota West Elementary School Battle – April 22
A week later, 12 teams at Yokota West Elementary competed for their own top three spots. The battle was tight, culminating in a dramatic tie for third place. To break it, the two tied teams went head‑to‑head in a fast‑paced Kahoot! tiebreaker, with the final winning team securing the last seat in the championship round. The event drew a large and enthusiastic crowd of families, teachers and students in grades 2-5. The top three teams were awarded medals and a spot at the Yokota Book Battle Championship.
Yokota Book Battle Championship – April 27
The excitement peaked at the Yokota Base Library, where the top three teams from each school arrived for the championship. Students enjoyed a special field trip that included a library tour, quiet reading time together, and lunch at the nearby BX food court. The championship itself was standing room only, with parents packing the space to support the six finalist teams.
The competition was incredibly close with all six teams separated by just one or two points throughout the first round. When the scores were tallied, a three‑way tie emerged, sending two Mendel teams and one Yokota West team into a sudden‑death final round.
After three intense questions, one Mendel Elementary School team emerged victorious, earning the title of first Yokota Book Battle Champions. They were awarded the Yokota Book Battle Trophy, which will be proudly displayed in the Mendel library until next year’s rematch.
Looking Ahead
Students from both schools left the championship energized and already planning their strategies for next year. With the trophy now at Mendel and Yokota West eager to claim it, the stage is set for an even more exciting competition next spring.
The Yokota Book Battle not only celebrated reading, it also built community, confidence, and a shared sense of accomplishment. If this year’s enthusiasm is any indication, the tradition is just getting started.
