Alexandria, VA —

The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) is proud to announce Lila Rebecca Cypers of Rota Middle High School (DoDEA Europe South), and Baden Thomas Francis of Kadena High School (DoDEA Pacific South), have been selected as U.S. Department of Education 2025 U.S. Presidential Scholars.

U.S. Department of Education 2025 U.S. Presidential Scholar Francis Baden

“All of us at DoDEA are so proud of Lila and Baden,” said Dr. Beth Schiavino-Narvaez, DoDEA Director. “This prestigious award recognizes the passion and effort with which these young scholars have approached their academic pursuits. Their achievements reflect not only their talent and determination but also the support of their families and loved ones.”

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative, and performing arts. In 2015, the program was again extended to recognize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields. Each year, up to 161 students are named Presidential Scholars, one of the nation's highest honors for high school students.

DoDEA participates annually by nominating exemplary students from across its global regions. Nominees undergo a rigorous evaluation that considers academic records, standardized test scores, leadership and service contributions, character, and personal essays detailing their achievements, challenges, and aspirations. For Career and Technical Education (CTE) candidates, additional criteria assess technical expertise, creativity, employability skills, and problem-solving ability.
