Alexandria, VA —

The Department of War Education Activity celebrates Month of the Military Child (MOMC) throughout April 2026, honoring the resilience, achievements and unique experiences of military-connected students across its global school system.

Observed annually in April, Month of the Military Child recognizes the more than 1.6 million children of service members who face frequent moves, family separations and the challenges of growing up in military communities. DoWEA serves more than 66,000 students across 161 schools in 11 foreign countries, seven states, Guam and Puerto Rico.

“Military children don’t just adapt — they lead with strength, service and an unwavering commitment to community,” said DoWEA Director Paul Craft. “As our nation marks America 250, their stories reflect the very spirit of America — resilience, sacrifice and the promise of the next generation.”

Throughout the month, DoWEA schools will host a wide range of events designed to celebrate and support military-connected students. Activities include spirit weeks, student recognition ceremonies, campus events highlighting military family experiences and opportunities for students to share their stories.

A signature event, Purple Up! Day, will take place Wednesday, April 15, 2026. Students, staff, families and community members are encouraged to wear purple — a color that represents all branches of the military — as a visible show of support for military children.

Families and community partners are encouraged to participate by sharing stories and photos using #MOMC2026 and #PurpleUp and by engaging with local school events. For more information and resources, visit https://www.dodea.edu/month-military-child
