DoWEA Expands Middle School Athletic Opportunities Worldwide
ALEXANDRIA, Va. —
The Department of War Education Activity is expanding middle school sports globally, ensuring that every DoWEA middle school student will have access to athletic opportunities beginning this winter.
Currently being offered throughout the Americas region, DoWEA is preparing to launch middle school sports programs across the Europe and Pacific regions, too. To support this effort, overseas schools will receive dedicated funding to successfully build and sustain these programs.
“Middle school athletics provide students with opportunities to grow beyond the classroom by building confidence, teamwork, leadership, and resilience,” said DoWEA Director Paul Craft. “We’re investing in experiences that help students succeed and that strengthen our commitment to military-connected families. We’re excited to bring these programs to our schools in Europe and the Pacific, and look forward to seeing more students benefit from participation in athletics.”
Expanding middle school sports is consistent with President Trump’s and Secretary Hegseth’s focus on physical fitness and student wellness. DoWEA continues to work closely with the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition to implement the Presidential Fitness Test throughout the school system, as well as partner with Chef Robert Irvine to promote healthy diets for military-connected children. Together, these initiatives reinforce DoWEA’ s commitment to developing resilient, healthy, and well-rounded students, while fostering leadership, perseverance, and lifelong healthy habits.
Families and communities will receive regular updates on available sports, schedules, eligibility, and participation as planning progresses. In the meantime, parents and guardians are encouraged to contact their local school with any questions.
