PEACHTREE CITY, GA — A dedication ceremony will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 6, at the new Randall D. Shughart Elementary and Randall D. Middle schools at Fort Bragg, N.C.
Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Acting Director Marilee Fitzgerald will serve as the keynote speaker. Other speakers will be Maj. Gen. Bennet Sacolick, Commander of the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School and Fort Bragg Garrison Commander Stephen J. Sicinski.
The 200,000 square-foot, $38 million building complex can house approximately 714 pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade students and 550 6th through 8th grade students. The schools were built to accommodate the growing availability of on-post housing.
The school is named in honor of Sergeant First Class Randall David Shughart, who was a soldier in the U.S. Army's special operations unit, the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta, or "Delta Force." Shughart posthumously received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Magadishu in October 1993. He was Sniper Team Leader during Operation Gothic Serpent, a joint-force assault mission to apprehend key advisers to Somali Warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid. During the assault, two Black Hawk helicopters were shot down. Shughart and his sniper teammate, Sergeant First Class Gary Gordon, (Fort Bragg opened Gary Gordon Elementary School in School Year 2008-2009) volunteered to be inserted close to the second crash site. They extracted Chief Warrant Officer Mike Durant and his crew members from the aircraft. They established a perimeter and each fought the enemy until mortally wounded. Durant was beaten and taken hostage, but lived to tell the heroic story of Shughart and Gordon.
Dr. Carolyn Carr is Principal of the Shughart Elementary School and Mr. Robbie Swint is the assistant principal. Mrs. Mary Leinard is the Principal of Shughart Middle School and Ms. Karen Jones is the assistant principal.
