Special Education NDSP

Special Education Process

Military family in grass with American flagThe NDSP is committed to the provision of appropriate special education and related services for DoD dependents who are space-required and eligible for NDSP. Whether your child is in need of assessment, has an active Individual Education Program (IEP), and/or you are planning a move overseas with a child with special needs, contact your NDSP Education Specialist who has a background in special education and is experienced in navigating special education in NDSP locations around the world.

Availability of Services

Special education services in overseas schools are limited and require advanced approval for reimbursement.  Many NDSP sites do not have adequate special education services in place, and schools are not required to follow the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).  Availability of services varies from site to site, so careful planning and open communication with your NDSP Education Specialist is critical to meeting the educational needs of your child.

Child Find Support

Child Find is an ongoing process to actively seek and identify individuals who are eligible for special education and related services. NDSP facilitates the provision of services for dependents ages 3-21. If you, your child’s school, or your child’s doctor are concerned with your child’s learning and/or development, please contact the NDSP Education Specialist for your region.
