When federal agencies in the Washington, DC, area are closed, emergency and telework-ready employees required to work must follow their agency's policies, including written telework agreements.
Non-emergency employees will be granted excused absence (administrative leave) for the number of hours they were scheduled to work unless they are:
Telework-ready employees who are scheduled to perform telework on the day of the announcement or who are required to perform telework on a day when federal agencies are closed must telework the entire workday or request leave, or a combination of both, in accordance with their agency's policies and procedures, subject to any applicable collective bargaining requirements.
Emergency employees are expected to report to their worksite unless otherwise directed by their agencies.
When the Federal government is open and operating under an Unscheduled Leave or Unscheduled Telework policy, non-emergency employees may take unscheduled leave, unscheduled telework (if telework ready), sick leave, or leave without pay without prior approval of their supervisor. Employees electing to take leave must notify their supervisor of their intent.
Non-emergency employees are granted excused absence (administrative leave) for up to the number of hours past their normal arrival time. For example, under a 2-hour delayed arrival, employees may arrive at work within two hours of their normal time without charge to leave. Employees who arrive to work later than the allowed delayed arrival must take annual leave or leave without pay for the additional period of absence.
