Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) to Transition from School Boards to School Advisory Committees

PEACHTREE CITY, GA —
The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) is advancing its school governance model for the 2025-2026 School Year by transitioning from traditional school boards to more dynamic School Advisory Committees (SACs)/Installation Advisory Committees (IACs) system across all DoDEA schools. This initiative aims to promote broader stakeholder engagement and improve operational efficiency within the school system serving military families.
The transition involves aligning all DoDEA Americas schools under a consistent advisory framework similar to the one successfully implemented in DoDEA's overseas regions. This change will foster a more comprehensive and responsive governance model. The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2025, signed into law on December 23, 2024, requires this initiative.
Key benefits of the transition include:
- Broadened Representation and Engagement:Â SACs will include various members such as parents, DoDEA employees, and students, ensuring more comprehensive community input.
- Operational Flexibility and Responsiveness: Â The new model allows greater adaptability to the unique challenges of different geographic locations, ensuring policies remain relevant to military families.
- Improved Governance and Transparency:Â Clearer accountability measures and enhanced communication channels will promote community trust and consistent oversight.
Title 10, U.S. Code, Section 2164, and Title 20, U.S. Code, Section 928, provides consistency across all DoDEA regions and clarifies the roles and responsibilities of advisory committees while emphasizing stakeholder involvement and operational efficiency.
This governance enhancement aligns with DoDEA's commitment to delivering high-quality education and fostering excellence worldwide for military-connected students.
