Annual AHERA Notification

DoDEA facilities have been inspected, or re-inspected, for Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM) every three years as required by the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) of 1986. DoDEA has chosen to inspect all facilities, including new schools which are designed as asbestos free, to ensure the safety of school occupants. Locations where ACM have been identified are closely monitored under a six-month periodic surveillance program. Asbestos is not a problem when managed correctly and DoDEA implements an Operations and Maintenance Program to safely monitor and manage all asbestos material. Both the three-year inspections and the asbestos management plans are completed by accredited professionals, as required by AHERA.

AHERA also requires schools to "ensure that workers and building occupants, or their legal guardians, are informed at least once each school year about inspections" and other asbestos related activities. This information is contained in an Asbestos Management Plan (AMP) for all DoDEA schools. A copy of the AMP is kept in the administration office for each location and is available for review during business hours.
