The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Virtual High School (DVHS) is proud to announce Kathrin Interian as its 2026 Teacher of the Year. Ms. Interian teaches German to students across the globe through the DVHS online platform.

Beyond her role as a German teacher, Interian serves as the World Language Department Chair, Summer School Lead Teacher, and Educational Technologist. She is also an active member of the Teacher Mentor Program and the Continuous School Improvement team.

Her leadership extends beyond the classroom—she has contributed her expertise as a member of the Technical Evaluation Board (TEB) for German software vendors, an evaluator for the World Language Technical Evaluation Team (TET), and a presenter at DVHS Worldwide Conferences.

Dr. Keri Lohmeier, DVHS Lead Administrator for Europe, praised Ms. Interian’s leadership and dedication, especially while serving as Chair for the World Languages Department.

“Kathrin has been instrumental in fostering collaboration, setting high standards, and keeping the department focused on continuous improvement and student success,” Lohmeier said. “Her ability to lead initiatives—such as mentoring sessions and efforts to enhance school organizational effectiveness—demonstrates her deep commitment to creating a positive learning environment for both students and staff.”

Mr. Kenneth Jankowski, fellow instructor and former DoDEA Teacher of the Year, said Interian is well known throughout the DVHS community as someone that works incredibly well with all students, parents, staff, administration, and counselors.

“One of the things I most admire about her,” Jankowski said, “is that she always puts students first. ‘Frau’ Interian’s compassion and energy are unmatched.”

Students also speak highly of Interian’s dedication and ability to make online learning engaging and inclusive.

“She makes German fun and interesting, even though she’s not physically at our school,” said one student. “She’s always available to answer questions, no matter the time, and her quick, detailed feedback helps us improve. She also supports students whose first language isn’t English, making sure everyone feels included and comfortable.”

As the 2026 DVHS Teacher of the Year, Interian is now eligible to compete for the overall DoDEA Teacher of the Year title.
