Dr. Jacob Sherwood, Pacific West District Superintendent, is pleased to announce the selection of Dr. Shanta Mayes as Instructional Systems Specialist Secondary Social Studies.

Dr. Mayes received a Doctorate in Instruction and Curriculum with an emphasis in Instructional Leadership from the University of Memphis, a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of New Orleans, and a Bachelor of Arts, Political Science, from Clark Atlanta University. She also holds an additional graduate degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Mercer University School of Medicine.

Dr. Mayes began her teaching career in the late nineties. Prior to joining DoDEA in 2018, she worked at the PK-12 and post-secondary levels. As a tenure track professor for the University of New Orleans she taught both graduate and undergraduate courses while serving on various university committees. She has held leadership roles that include, but are not limited to Curriculum Coordinator, Assistant Principal, College and Career Counselor, and Academic Coach. Dr. Mayes has led school accreditation teams and worked to move schools out of needs improvement status. Most recently, she served as an Instructional Systems Specialist for the United State Army within the Cyber Center of Excellence at Fort Eisenhower. She is an advocate for learning at all levels and continues to push an aggressive research agenda towards literacy intervention through core content areas and family involvement in schools.

In her spare time Dr. Mayes works diligently with both civic and professional organizations.

She is a lover of history, world languages, and the arts. Dr. Mayes is most excited to embark on a new journey as she continues her work to serve military connected students and families within the Pacific West District of DoDEA.
