Ms. Heather Weiland – New Assistant Principal: Bob Hope Primary School.

Okinawa, Japan —

The Pacific South DSO would like to introduce Ms. Heather Weiland – New Assistant Principal: Bob Hope Primary School.

Heather Weiland is a native of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, and received her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. She has taught more than 25 years in both the public and private sector including 1st and 4th grade, 7th/8th grade ELA/Social Studies, Music K-8, and private piano lessons. Ms.Weiland has also taught graduate classes at UW-Platteville and UW-Stout for those seeking Reading Specialist licensure.

In 2010, Ms. Weiland earned her Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership and holds certifications for Elementary Education Grades 1-8, Principal Administration, Curriculum & Instruction, Reading, and Reading Specialist for K-12. She served on the board for the Wisconsin Council for Exceptional Children and presented at the state conference on Universal Design for Learning. From 2009-2017, Ms. Weiland served as the National Junior Honor Society advisor in Oconomowoc and Merton, Wisconsin. In 2014, Ms. Weiland was honored to be the VFW State of Wisconsin Teacher of the Year.

Ms. Weiland has a passion for meeting the needs of all staff and students. Since 2011, Ms. Weiland has worked with various school districts in Wisconsin to implement formative and summative common assessment practices, Reading and Writing Workshop K-12, RTI interventions including LLI, technology in the classroom, UDL, and research-based instructional practices. She has supported schools with developing intervention programs to meet the needs of gifted students and students in special education. Ms. Weiland has been an Educator Effectiveness and Literacy Coach and a District Literacy Coordinator for the Merton School District in Merton, Wisconsin.

In 2017, Heather joined DODEA - Europe South District in Vicenza, Italy, as the ISS for PK-5 Literacy, Humanities, and Sure Start. In her ISS role, Ms. Weiland has assisted with successful Europe South District Accreditation, the PK-5 Literacy Implementation, LLI and BAS training, Elementary Science Training, and other support, as needed, for the district’s schools in Italy, Turkey, Spain, and Bahrain. Her husband Dave is a Social Studies teacher at Vicenza High School. Heather and Dave have been married over 30 years and have four wonderful grown children (Caleb, Lauren and husband Tyler, Andrew, and Sarah) and one very loving granddaughter, Annabella. Ms. Weiland has loved learning and collaborating with her colleagues in Europe.

She is very excited about her new role as Assistant Principal at Bob Hope Primary School and looks forward to supporting and learning from students, colleagues, and community members in Okinawa.
