Lisa Williams and school events coordinator

Fort Bragg, NC —

The North Carolina governor recognized a Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Americas region teacher from Fort Bragg Feb. 11.

Governor Roy Cooper honored 40 African American education leaders from across the state for their many accomplishments that have helped move North Carolina forward and left a positive impact on students during his Black History Month celebration. One of the honorees was Lisa Williams, a music teacher and school events coordinator, at Bowley and Shughart Elementary Schools. Williams is a DoDEA 2016 Fort Bragg Teacher of Year, which recognizes and promotes excellence in teaching, leading, and learning. She is in her 20th year of teaching, which nine of years are in DoDEA. She is currently working on her doctorate in Education Innovative Technology, with a focus in Teacher Leader Digital Transformations.

“Being honored by Governor Roy Cooper as a DoDEA teacher leader among a noteworthy list of educators was indeed a life changing experience,” said Ms. Williams. “The highlight of the evening however, was my brief conversation with the Governor about the beauty of the Executive Mansion's grand piano. The governor asked if I played, and my response was, "Why yes sir, all of my life. It is one of the many ways I reach and inspire my students every single day!"

The event was held at the North Carolina Governor's Executive Mansion in Raleigh. It was hosted by the N.C. African American Heritage Commission and the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. Attendees included Susi H. Hamilton, Secretary, N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources; Dr. Valerie Ann Johnson, Chair, N.C. African American Heritage Commission; and Tracey Burns, Assistant Secretary for Diversity and Cultural Inclusion, DNCR.

Mr. Antoine Sharp, the 2020 DoDEA Teacher of the Year, was also recognized. Sharpe is 7th grade math teacher at Humphreys Middle School in South Korea. To see a list of all the honorees, visit https://governor.nc.gov/news/governor-cooper-honors-african-american-ed…
