OKINAWA, JAPAN – The Ryukyu Middle and Bechtel Library Information Center, which currently share a space, proudly hosted the second annual "The Fifth Awakens" — a Star Wars-themed extravaganza that brought the school community together for a day of fun, creativity, and inspiration – on Monday, May 5, 2025.
Leading up to the event, elementary students kicked off the celebration by diving into a Star Wars-themed book that focused on characterization and author’s voice. On May 5, first and second graders enjoyed a special meet-and-greet with character actors from a galaxy far, far away.
In the library throughout the day, third through eighth grade students participated in a variety of galactic activities that sparked imagination and teamwork. Highlights included:
Star Wars trivia challenges
Feeding Grogu
Destroying the Death Star
Lightsaber crafting
Star Wars Bingo
Origami Yoda creations
And much more!

The event was made even more special by visits from members of the local Okinawa Star Wars group, who brought the Force to life with their incredible costumes and enthusiasm. Students also showcased their own creativity, dressing up as iconic characters from Princess Leia to Sith Lords.
The Ryukyu Middle and Bechtel Elementary PTOs provided volunteers, decorations, and donated prizes to celebrate and recognize students who best embodied the spirit of Star Wars. Kirk Thompson, the Pacific Region Instructional Systems Specialist for Library Information Centers, volunteered to take photographs and engage with the students in the activities.
“We had a good feeling about our second Star Wars event, and it did not disappoint,” said Lisa Korkowski, Bechtel Elementary Information Specialist. “We loved providing an opportunity for learners of all ages to come together for a galactic adventure. It’s always inspiring to see the collaboration between the schools and the community!”
The Fifth Awakens was a stellar success, uniting the Bechtel and Ryukyu Middle School communities in a day filled with joy, imagination, and the enduring magic of Star Wars.
