Contract awarded for renovations, new construction at Bechtel Elementary School
Okinawa, Japan —
The Department of Defense Education Activity – Pacific Region is pleased to announce the award for renovations and new construction at Bechtel Elementary School was completed Aug. 30, 2023. The $125 million contract was awarded to Nishimatsu Construction Co., Ltd.
Construction will begin this fall on the project, which includes new construction of approximately 81,000 square feet and extensive renovations of 68,094 square feet to the existing building. The project also includes new furnishings and playground improvements.
“When complete, Bechtel Elementary School will feature classrooms and collaborative common areas suited to support military-connected students for decades to come,” said Ms. Lois Rapp, DoDEA Pacific Director for Student Excellence.
During construction, Bechtel Elementary will continue to operate out of Kadena Elementary (Kindergarten, Sure Start, and Preschool Services for Children with Disabilities) and Ryukyu Middle (grades 1-5).
“The reconstruction and re-imagining of Bechtel Elementary School shows a steadfast commitment to the development and well-being of our military families here on Okinawa,” said Maj. Gen. Stephen Liszewski, Commanding General of Marine Corps Installations Pacific. “This is more than a construction project; it’s a symbol of our dedication to building a brighter future for the generations that will follow in our footsteps. We are proud to support this exciting DoDEA project.”
DoDEA plans, directs, coordinates, and manages Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade education programs for school-aged children of Department of Defense personnel who would otherwise not have access to a high-quality public education. DoDEA schools are located in Europe, the Pacific, Western Asia, the Middle East, Cuba, the United States, Guam, and Puerto Rico. DoDEA also provides support and resources to Local Educational Activities throughout the U.S. that serve children of military families.
