Dr. Jason Ter Horst named Superintendent for Europe West

Dr. Michelle Howard-Brahaney, Department of Defense Education Activity – Europe Director for Student Excellence, announces that Dr. Jason Ter Horst has been selected as the next superintendent for DoDEA-Europe’s West District. “Dr. Ter Horst is a highly effective and innovative leader, I am proud to announce his selection to this critical position,” said Brahaney.

Raised in a military family, Ter Horst is a former DoDEA student. After twenty years working in the Colorado Educational System, Ter Horst began working for DoDEA in 2016, serving as Community Superintendent for DoDEA-Europe’s East District. During those six years, he has successfully supervised numerous schools within the Kaiserslautern Military Community.

Ter Horst earned his bachelor’s degree from Colorado State University. He completed his Master’s Degree in Education at the University of Colorado in 1998. In 2018, he completed his PhD program at the University of Colorado. After earning his master’s degree, Dr. Ter Horst became an middle school assistant principal, then principal in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He taught grades K-12 throughout his educational career, spending the most amount of time at the middle school level as science teacher and coach. While serving as the Executive Director of K-12 Schools, Ter Horst concurrently taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Colorado in the Educational Leadership Department.

As veteran of the U.S. Army, Ter Horst is committed to doing whatever he can to support our military community. He and his family are excited to become part of the Europe West District, as he transitions to his new role as Superintendent.
DoDEA plans, directs, coordinates, and manages pre-kindergarten through 12th grade education programs for school-age children of Department of Defense personnel who would otherwise not have access to high-quality public education. DoDEA schools are located in Europe, the Pacific, Western Asia, the Middle East, Cuba, the United States, Guam, and Puerto Rico. DoDEA also provides support and resources to Local Educational Agencies throughout the United States that serve children of military families.
