As a DoDEA school administrator for more than a decade, Mr. McKinnon has served as a school principal at every level of the organization to include high school, middle school and elementary school. His passion for education and helping students inspired him to become an educational leader so that he would be able to help students throughout the schools in which he worked. Although he truly enjoys being a principal, he reflects positively on his time in the classroom where he taught almost every elementary grade as a regular classroom teacher and elementary ESL specialist.
During his career in DoDEA, Mr. McKinnon had the unique experience of assisting in the establishment of DoDEA schools on the island of Guam in 1997. In addition to his time at Fort Campbell and Guam, Mr. McKinnon spent two years teaching in Iceland with DoDDS Europe. He believes that his experiences have given him a great perspective on life and the world and he draws on this regularly to find innovative ways to help every student be successful.
When Mr. McKinnon was asked how he felt about becoming the principal of Barsanti Elementary School, he said, "I could not be more pleased to be returning to the elementary school level where my career began. It just feels like home to me and I am looking forward to making it feel that way for the students and stakeholders too. Go Bulldogs!"
Mr. Battey is joining our Barsanti Family as our new assistant principal. He is moving his family here from the greater Chicago, Illinois area and is looking forward to serving the students, staff and families at Barsanti Elementary School. Mr. Battey began pursuing a career in education while working as a middle school custodian. In 2005, he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Illinois State University and went on to spend several years teaching 2nd and 4th grade in the Plainfield, Illinois School District. In 2009, Mr. Battey earned his Master’s Degree in Education Administration from Governor’s State University and in 2012 was appointed Assistant Principal. In 2015, he began serving as principal in the Yorkville School District in Illinois. Mr. Battey is excited to be joining DoDEA. His father is a veteran of the Army having served at Fort Bragg, N.C. during the Vietnam Conflict Era. His grandfather served in the Army during World War I. As his life has progressed, Mr. Battey has had the desire to serve his country as his family has before him. DoDEA is a natural fit as it allows Mr. Battey to continue to positively influence education while serving our military families. Please help us in welcoming Mr. Robert Battey as he transitions to Barsanti Elementary School.
