DoDEA's College and Career Ready Standards for Science (CCRSS) were developed from current research on science and science education as outlined in the Framework for K-12 Science Education. The program is designed to actively engage students in scientific and engineering practices, applying crosscutting concepts to deepen their understanding of core science and engineering ideas. The curriculum extends elementary learning, requiring inquiry-based instruction to promote problem-solving, decision-making, critical thinking, and applied learning. A strong science foundation is imperative for all students to pursue college and career options.

The DoDEA Science Education Program is designed to ensure students are equipped for both active, informed citizenship and future career success in a technologically advanced world. This goal focuses on empowering students to be skeptical, informed, and analytical about the scientific information they encounter every day. In modern society, students are constantly exposed to information—from news reports on climate change or public health, to product claims in advertising.

  • Understanding Reliability: Students learn how to evaluate the credibility of a source, distinguish between evidence-based claims and misinformation/pseudoscience, and recognize the difference between scientific consensus and outlier opinions.
  • Relevance to Daily Life: This means applying scientific understanding to make personal decisions, such as understanding nutrition labels, evaluating the effectiveness of a medical treatment, or interpreting local environmental data.
  • Scientific Literacy: It ensures that regardless of their career path, all DoDEA graduates possess the fundamental scientific literacy needed to participate effectively in civic discussions and make informed choices.

The second goal addresses the need to cultivate the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators. It is aimed to develop student interest in pursuing Science, Engineering, Technology, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

  • Building a Strong Foundation: The program provides the rigorous, foundational knowledge (the Disciplinary Core Ideas) and the practical skills (the Science and Engineering Practices) necessary for success in advanced college courses and technical careers.
  • Developing STEM Skills: Preparation involves more than just memorizing facts; it focuses on developing skills like problem-solving, logical reasoning, inquiry-based investigation, and quantitative analysis.
  • Engagement in Practice: The curriculum actively engages students in engineering design processes and scientific investigations to give them firsthand experience with how professionals in STEM fields think and work. This practical experience is crucial for transitioning successfully into higher education and the modern workforce.
