Department of Defense Education Activity

Who is the AVID Student?

AVID targets students in the academic middle, who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but are often falling short of their potential. AVID pulls these students out of their unchallenging courses and puts them on the college track: acceleration instead of remediation. AVID student eligibility is a 2.0-3.5 GPA, with mid to high scores on standardized tests such as PSAT. Application, interview, teacher and/or administrator recommendation, and an expressed commitment to achievement are required prior to enrollment.

What is required in the AVID elective class?

While the course features many interactive and highly engaging activities, AVID students also are required to utilize the AVID binder, take Cornell Notes, and participate in Collaborative Learning Groups. The course also investigates post-secondary opportunities targeted towards the interests of the students.
