School Handbook


When hurricanes, snow or other severe weather conditions occur, it is sometimes necessary to cancel school, delay the opening of school, or dismiss classes early.

School Closings

On days when the West Point Schools (WPS) are closed due to inclement weather, the news media will make appropriate announcements. The decision to close the West Point Schools is made by WPS administration, in consultation with USMA, and is independent of other school districts, i.e., Highland Falls. School authorities in the surrounding communities may or may not close their schools. On days when weather is inclement, parents are urged to insure that school will be in session prior to dropping their children off at school.

AdHoc Notification System

School delays, closures, early dismissals and information about school events will be communicated to parents using the AdHoc notification system. AdHoc sends a recorded message to every telephone number listed in the school database so that parents will be sure to receive critical information. The only way to keep the message from going to a particular phone number is to remove it from the school database, which would mean that the number would not be accessible to teachers or other staff members.

Good Afternoon Parents/Guardians,

Thank you so much for your support during this unprecedented school year. This is the last weekly district update since our school year is coming to a close. We will continue to update you as needed with information for this upcoming school year 2020/2021.

Updates:

  • DoDEA will be offering a summer educational enhancement program beginning June 1. The DoDEA Summer Learning website provides grades K-8 students and parents educational resources to bridge learning between the current and upcoming school years. For more information, visit https://www.dodea.edu/SummerLearning/.
    • Overviews describing what students should know and be able to do in each grade K-8
    • A centralized access point to DoDEA’s online libraries of e-books and digital media
    • Engaging projects that integrate multiple subject areas
    • An easy-to-use readiness check for math and reading
    • Free high-quality, online resources that are available for students in core content
  • The Department of Defense Education Activity's (DoDEA) Online Summer High School Program allows DoDEA high school students the opportunity to continue learning throughout the summer from June 19 to July 27, 2020. For more information, talk with your local high school counselor.
    • The program was established to provide students who are at-risk of not meeting graduation requirements the opportunity to replace a failing grade or fulfill a course requirement.
    • Additionally, students may attempt to earn original credit in select coursework during the summer.
    • The Online Summer High School Program is designed for students to complete the equivalent of one semester course credit (0.50 credit). Enrollment is limited to students currently enrolled in grades 9-12 during the school year, who will be returning to a DoDEA high school for the 2020-2021 school year.
  • All DoDEA students in grades K-12 receive a Google account for educational purposes. Students enrolled in a DoDEA school retain their Google account throughout enrollment,
    including during the summer. Account Removal and Summer Moratorium guidelines are as follows:
    • Current students and students withdrawing from DoDEA schools after April 15 can retain their Google account throughout the summer. Otherwise, when a student withdraws after August 31, the Google account is removed shortly thereafter.
    • Google Takeout can be used to save and transfer DoDEA Google account data such as emails, Photos, Google Docs, and Contacts. Students can start the process by going to https://takeout.google.com.
    • K-12 students will receive notification regarding account access and the recommended backup option by May 18, 2020.
  • Schools are engaged in end of school year closing activities. You can request more information from your local school principal.
  • DoDEA is working on plans for the upcoming school year 2020-2021. Any decisions about the upcoming school year will be coordinated with your local installation and shared. We encourage you to continue to follow guidelines of the Center of Disease Control (CDC), your military installation, and local health officials to flatten the curve of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We will continue working with our Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) leadership and local commanders to provide the most up-to-date guidance and the way forward.

We recognize the hardship this decision places on many families, but believe it is in the public's best interest if it means we can contribute to protecting our students as well as the community's health and well-being. 

The following website serves as DoDEA's official source for information on COVID-19, highlighting associated impacts as well as response and prevention efforts. Please continue to visit this website for updates. 

Also, we ask families to continue following the COVID-19/coronavirus guidelines as shared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that are posted on its website. These include monitoring family members' health for flu-like symptoms and reaching out to a local health provider if these symptoms occur. 

Please know that this is a unique situation for DoDEA schools and the nation. We do not yet have all the answers but are committed to communicating with our students and their families as frequently and openly as possible. DoDEA and your community leadership will continue to coordinate closely to ensure accurate and timely information is available and to encourage all appropriate measures to help prevent the spread of the virus. 

Office of DoDEA Policy

The Policy Team of OPLP administers and operates the DoDEA Issuance Program, the Issuance Focal Point Working Group, and facilitates DoD-level issuance coordination for DoDEA.
