Assessment of the Performance toward Proficiency in Languages
The ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) is a web-based proficiency and performance assessment of K-12 standards-based language learning. It assesses tasks across the three modes of communication as defined by theWorld-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages. AAPPL often situates tasks within the context of today's communication media. For example, test takers perform tasks such as participating in a virtual video chat, creating wikis, and e-mailing to demonstrate language ability.
AAPPL tasks are informed by the functions described in theACTFL Proficiency Guidelinesand ratings are assigned according to theACTFL Performance Descriptors for Language Learners. Score reports identify a proficiency range along with pinpointing a narrower performance score.
Student Participation
Students in Grades 6-12 who are enrolled in World Languages courses at Level 2 and Level 4 will be administered the AAPPL to measure performance and proficiency in World Languages.
- Students in Level 2 World Languages courses will be administered the AAPPL Form A.
- Students in Level 4 World Languages courses will be administered the AAPPL Form B.
Features of the AAPPL include:
- Assessment of the four language domains of Interpersonal Listening/Speaking, Presentational Writing, Interpretive Reading, and Interpretive Listening.
- Alignment with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Performance Descriptors for Language Learners.
- Assessment of the student's ability to engage in linguistic tasks on topics of personal, social, and academic relevance across the three modes of communication - Listening/Speaking, Writing, and Reading.
AAPPL Assessment Score Reports
A single AAPPL Score, according to the ACTFL Performance Scale, is issued for each component of the test (Interpersonal Listening/Speaking, Presentational Writing, Interpretive Reading, and Interpretive Listening). Students receive an AAPPL Score Report consisting of an AAPPL Score for each component, an explanation of each score, and recommendations for improvement. These recommendations are based on the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines 2012.

Information on CBE assessment is available on the DoDEA Policy web site.
CBE allows DoDEA high school students to take an examination in order to receive high school credit. The opportunity for CBE exists in limited circumstances for DoDEA students are:
- Transferring from a non-accredited education program and seek to earn course credit; or
- Transferring to a DoDEA high school and have taken a course (e.g., a high school level taken in middle school), but were not granted school credit.
DoDEA uses the AAPPL assessment for CBE purposes in select World Languages Courses.
